Dan Spalding began his musical odyssey at age 9 with
a clarinet salvaged from the trunk of a totaled 1966
Ford Galaxie. For the following six years he tried in
vain to woo his first lover with a woodwind. At age
fifteen, weary of the marching band and countless
amorous rejections, Spalding resorted to the bass
guitar, an instrument known to stimulate the third
shakra in the fairer sex. After four more years of
complete and total sexual frustration, Spalding also
abandoned the bass in favor of the then wildly popular
Salad Spinner.
After exhaustive experimentation with the
controversial new "instrument" Spalding eventually
gave up on music entirely after Todd Rundgren returned
his demo tape with a memo concluding "...you, sir,
are a flippin' idiot!"
In 2002, Spalding retuned to the music world joining
forces with Barton Cooke and the "Koom-by-Yah
Mothertruckers". "Spaldo was a great addition to the
band" states Cooke, "mostly 'cause he could pay cash
for the new sound system." Spalding then methodically
alienated each of the other eight rhythm guitar
players leaving only he and Cooke. "I like playing
music with just Bo (Cooke);" claims Spalding, " his
chunky brand of rhythm guitar is the only style that
doesn't compete with my tasty and intricate bass
wizardry."
Spalding is optimistic in his quest for musical
distinction with upcoming recordings utilizing the
Popeel Pocket Fisherman and the Flo-bee; he also
holds high hopes for his first romantic conquest.
