Save Lefty is a tight trio of musicians committed to
interpreting an eclectic mix of classic songs. The
band is made up of singer/guitarist Barton "Smokin'
Bo" Cooke, singer/guitarist Dirk "The Hair" Swartz
and electric and standup bass player Dan "Dan"
Spalding.
Founded by Cooke and Spalding in 1960 as The
Leftlighter Orchestra, the band signed with Motown in
1962 and became The Lefthanders. In 1968, Swartz and
his car Delilah were added, and the trio became the
Save Lefty Experience, only to change their name three
years later to Save Lefty Starship. After several
failed incarnations in the 1970s (The Leftadelic Funk
Brothers, Kiss Lefty, Lefty and Tenille) infighting
over credit caused the band to change its name one
last time (to Dan Spalding presents Bo Cooke's Save
Lefty Featuring Dirk Swartz) and eventually led to a
break-up. Twenty years later, the band reformed in
2002 as Save Lefty and has been available for gigs in
the Spokane area ever since.
